De studie van Prof. Streeck in het zwaar getroffen Heinsberg/Gangelt net over de Duitse grens is het meest complete random onderzoek dat ik tot dusverre heb gezien. Helaas lijkt het er niet op dat Nederland de ambitie heeft om dit voorbeeld te volgen en/of te leren van dit soort studies. Daarom geef ik hier de belangrijkste conclusies tot nu toe.

Zolang de informatie over de aerosols niet serieus wordt genomen, duwen het RIVM en virologen ons onnodig de 1,5 meter maatschappij in. Daar komt bij dat men een bron van besmetting negeert, die relevant kan zijn als de scholen straks weer openen, met alle mogelijke gevolgen van dien.

Het RIVM, OMT en de regering maken een ernstige fout als ze het verspreiden via aerosols blijven negeren. Onderzoek toont aan dat bij een luchtvochtigheid in binnenruimtes van 43% (bij 20°) de kans om besmet te worden door aerosols 5 keer zo klein is als bij een luchtvochtigheid van 20%.

The Financial Times heeft een pagina waar je de cijfers omtrent de verspreiding van het virus per land kan vergelijken. Aan de hand van deze cijfers kan je enkele opvallende conclusies trekken. Met name het verplichte gebruik van mondkapjes lijkt de verspreiding sterk tegen te gaan.

Een geograaf hoeft niet te weten hoe een trein werkt om te kunnen onderzoeken hoe belangrijk de routes van de spoorwegen waren voor de ontwikkelingspatronen van steden en regio's. Datzelfde geldt voor een pandemie. In eerste instantie gaan de virologen aan de slag. Maar nu hebben we daarbovenop elke vorm van expertise nodig. Zo ook die van ondergetekende.
